Valentine’s Day isn’t the only day in February where your heart should be on your mind! February is American Heart Health Month, and this week we’re going to be looking at how exercise and a healthy heart go hand in hand.

With springtime just around the corner, the days are getting longer and the skies are getting sunnier – that means perfect weather for getting off the couch and onto your feet. Studies show that inactive people are nearly twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are active. The good news is that you don’t have to run marathons in order to be active! You can take a walk around the block, dance to three of your favorite songs, or bike to the store instead of taking your car. Simply doing 30 minutes of physical activity a day can reduce your chances of developing high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Setting goals and getting into a routine are good steps that help you stick with achieving the recommended 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week. That may sound like a lot when taken all at once, but breaking it up into chunks makes it much less intimidating! A 10 minute walk here, a 30 minute bike ride there – it all adds up to a healthier heart, and a healthier you.
